Faith: the Cure for Anxiety and Loneliness

Faith, lonliness, anxiety, challenges during a pandemic, faith journey, bible verse

Faith in God is the cure for anxiety and loneliness. Hebrews 11:1 ESV says, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Experiencing a pandemic is something new for everyone, and I am sure that we can all agree that there have been many challenges during a pandemic. Interestingly, anxiety and loneliness seem to be major challenges for many during quarantine and stay-at-home orders. Faith in God’s promises provides a cure for anxiety and loneliness.

Anxiety

Having anxiety is very difficult. However, having anxiety during a global pandemic is even tougher and maybe a bit overwhelming. While I was a master at avoiding my feelings, they (my emotions) caused me to express them in negative ways: withdrawal, entertainment addictions, and denial. Recently, I have overcome these things, yet I am still dealing with the roots of anxiety during these current conditions of uncertain times.

Loneliness

Now, just like you, I face my new challenge: loneliness. Earlier this year, it was much easier to manage my feelings. I was able to go out, make new friends, and reconnect with some of my old ones. When everything changed, I went into a little, tiny panic mode. I suddenly lost all the support I had. To make matters worse, my foot was injured, so I could not dance (which is still one of my favorite activities). You might be wondering how I am still holding on strong and still fighting my desire to return to my old way of living.

Deuteronomy 31:6 says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

The words of Moses are spoken to the nation of Israel before they enter the promised land. These words are a reminder that even though we fear and face anxiety and loneliness, God loves us. These words strike true for different periods of my life. Even with the coronavirus spreading throughout the world, we should not fear. The Lord will grant you strength and peace through faith in Him, all you must do is ask him.

Faith is believing that God will do what he says he will do.  He says he will never leave us nor forsake us.  He also says that nothing can separate us from His love.

Faith: the Cure for Anxiety and LonelinessPaul the apostle, writes in his letter to the church of Rome, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God.” From Romans 8:38-39.

This verse reminds me that God loves you so much that nothing you can do or feel will take you from God’s hands. No matter how you feel, the Lord will always be with you. Our debt has been paid in full, yet there is still enough to walk away with more in our hearts than we ever owed in sin debt.

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Let me tell you, believing this is hard. As I walk through anxiety and loneliness during a pandemic, I find myself caught in the claws of these emotions. Even with my family at home, I, like so many others, miss going out to talk with my friends or even seeing people I know in the street. I know what my feeling tells me may be true; however, I also remember that God is the truth. He will never leave me or forsake me because he said so. I also know that he will never leave you and never forsake you.
