Bible Verses about Pain and HealingBIble verses about emotional pain, Psalms 27

My son is a Boy Scout, and I remember asking him what they did during severe storms. I expected some amazing answer, but he replied, “Mom, sometimes the storms are so bad that you have to seek refuge and shelter until the storm passes.”  In the same way, God desires that we seek Him when the storms of pain and suffering become severe because God promises to be a refuge to those with pain and hurt.

A refuge is a shelter of protection from any danger, trouble, or distress.  God promises to be a refuge, a safe place, to anyone who calls upon Him.  The following Bible Verses about pain and healing describe seeking God as a refuge and deliverer.

“Hear my voice when I call, LORD; be merciful to me and answer me. My heart says to you, ‘Seek his face!’ Your face, LORD, I will seek.” ~ Psalms 27:7-8 NIV

“Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.” ~ Psalms 16:1 NIV

“As for me, I call to God, and the LORD saves me.” ~ Psalms 55:16 NIV

David wrote Psalm 34 after he pretended to be insane in the presence of Achish king of Gath (see 1 Samuel 21). Some of the best Bible verses about emotional pain and healing are contained in Psalm 34 because of three main themes. The themes and verses are highlighted below to guide you when reading the entire chapter of Psalm 34.

First, David seeks the LORD, and the LORD answers him.

“I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.” ~ Psalms 34:4-5 NIV

“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.” ~ Psalms 34:17 NIV

Secondly, God delivers his people.

“The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them.” ~ Psalms 34:7 NIV

“The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all.” ~ Psalms 34:19 NIV

Finally, God is a refuge for his people.

“The LORD will rescue his servants; no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.” ~ Psalms 34:22 NIV

How do I ask God for emotional healing?

“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” ~ Matthew 7:7-8 NIV

“’He himself bore our sins’ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; ‘by his wounds you have been healed.’” ~ 1 Peter 2:24 NIV

After studying Bible verses about emotional pain and healing, we begin to understand who God is.  God is a refuge and a shelter.  He is our redeemer and deliverer.  In Christ, we can securely ask God for emotional healing.

How do I ask God for emotional healing?  Matthew says to ask, seek and knock. We must begin asking God for emotional healing by seeking God and asking Him to come into the pain.  This means that we must be honest with God and tell Him about our pain. God is interested in every wound and trauma that we carry, and it is by Jesus’ wounds that we have been healed.

Jesus is holy and righteous. He is a healer and redeemer.  He comes to heal what has happened and to redeem the pain you continue to carry.

Matthew 7:7-8 is an invitation for you to access God through Jesus Christ.  As you receive this invitation and enter God’s presence through the Holy Spirit and Jesus’ work on the cross, it is your turn to extend an invitation to Jesus. Give Jesus access to your heart by telling him about your pain and inviting him into the pain.

Jesus may ask you to walk through the pain with Him, but He will guide you every step of the way.  Oftentimes, the pain we are holding onto seems to come from a loss that we refuse to grieve.  Remember that the Bible says that Jesus will never leave you nor forsake you, and you will not be alone, even if you grieve a loss.
