How to Powerfully Pray “Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done”

How to Powerfully Pray “Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done”your kingdom come, your will be done

“Your kingdom come, your will be done” is the greatest phrase used to describe intercessory prayer. There is no more powerful prayer than asking for God’s kingdom to come and for His will to be done.

Intercessory prayer is asking God to intervene with any situation, person, or circumstance. There are two reasons that we use intercessory prayer:

  1. Sometimes, that situation, person, or circumstance hinders us from being in God’s presence, so we must lift them to God in prayer to remain in God’s presence.

In this situation, you are to “cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7 NIV.)

  1. Other times, God may be allowing us to pray and invite his power and glory to be revealed: “on earth as it is in heaven.”

We see this example in John 11 when Jesus prays to God before raising Lazarus from the dead.

“So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said ‘Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.’” ~ John 11:41-42 NIV

In Matthew 6, Jesus teaches us how to pray for all things, and Matthew 6:10 is the key verse for intercessory prayer.

“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” ~ Matthew 6:10 NIV

To look at the meaning of Matthew 6:10, we are going to break it half, starting with the meaning of “your kingdom come.”

Your Kingdom Come meaning

What does “your kingdom come” mean?  When praying “your kingdom come”, you are asking for a present tense movement of God’s Spirit to come and intervene or intercede on the behalf of your situation, person, or circumstance.

How do you make the prayer phrase “your kingdom come” impactful?  Pray it, then be still and invite Jesus to come. Being still in God’s presence and inviting him to come through prayer is the first part of intercessory prayer.

Using Jesus’ words in Matthew 6 is a perfect way to start an intercessory prayer.

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come…” ~ Matthew 6-10 NIV

When praying, talk to God and tell him what your concerns are.  Ask for his kingdom to come into every concern.

Exodus 14:14 NIV says, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” This inspiring Bible verse about being still reminds us that God fights for us when we lift prayers to him and remain still in Him.

Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done Meaning

What does “your kingdom come, your will be done” mean? When you are asking for God’s will to be done, you are asking for Him to intervene or intercede on something in the future tense.

As Abraham was walking with the Lord and the two other visitors in Genesis 18, the Lord says, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?” (Genesis 18:17 NIV) This indicates that Abraham is in the Lord’s presence and talking with him, much like we do with asking “your kingdom come” in prayer.

With this revelation, Abraham intercedes on behalf of the righteous in Sodom.  In Genesis 18:23-25 NIV, Abraham says, “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?” What if there are fifty righteous people in the city?  Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

Interestingly, this conversation between Abraham and the Lord goes back and forth until Abraham has peace that God will save Sodom if 10 righteous can be found. Abraham leaves the conversation with the Lord when he has peace that the Lord’s will be done.

This is the same for us.  We must remain in God’s presence and present our prayer requests to him until we have perfect peace that the Lord’s will be done.

Dear Christian Friend, know that your prayers are being heard, and God’s will for you is best.  Romans 8:28 NIV says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”control.docx your kingdom come, your will be done
