Inspiring Bible Verses About Being Still
What does it mean to be still? Why should we study Bible verses about being still? If we want to know God more intimately, we must understand what God says about being still.
What does it mean to be still?
“…Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” ~ Luke 5:16 NIV
What does it mean to be still? Being still means to quiet yourself and listen. Two important characteristics of being still include remaining in Christ and renewing your mind, such as the following Bible verses about being still:
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” ~ John 15:4 NIV
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” ~ Romans 12:2 NIV
Taking these verses into consideration, think about why Jesus withdrew by himself to pray. He was remaining in his Father God’s presence through prayer, and, as a result, Jesus knew God’s will. Being still in God’s presence does the same for us, and we should take Jesus’ example to heart by learning to be still.
Learning to Be Still through Listening
To begin learning to be still, we must include Luke 10:38-42 as important Bible verses about being still by listening. In this passage, Jesus visits the home of Martha in Bethany, which is a couple of miles outside of Jerusalem. Luke 10:39 describes Martha’s sister.
“She had a sister called Mary, who sat the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.” ~ Luke 10:39 NIV
Of course, Martha wanted everything to be perfect for Jesus, so she complained to Jesus about Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus being still and listening while Martha worked to make things perfect.
Jesus replies to Martha starting in verse 41: “’ Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered,’ you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’” ~ Luke 10:41-42 NIV
What did Mary do? She sat at the feet of Jesus being still in his presence and listening. Mary chose to be still in Jesus’ presence, and she listened to his teachings to learn more about her Savior.

“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” ~ Psalms 46:10 NIV
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.” ~ Psalms 37:7 NIV
These Bible verses about being still teach us that stillness before God allows us to see God’s glory work in our lives and to know who He really is.
Just as Exodus 14:14 NIV says, “The Lord will fight for you; you only need to be still,” take a prayer request before God. Pray and ask God to move and to show His glory in that situation. Then, sit quietly in God’s presence until you feel the peace of God come like a blanket of security. At that moment, you can trust God that He will answer your prayer and fight that battle according to His will.
